Abstract

The proposed research project aims to conduct action research on OpenGov systems, particularly focusing on mechanisms of decentralized governance, participatory decision-making, and the application of governance frameworks within the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems. The objective is to assess the effectiveness of these systems and provide actionable insights to improve the governance processes.

Motivation

OpenGov represents a significant innovation in decentralized governance, promising more democratic, transparent, and efficient decision-making processes. However, the practical implementation of these systems presents challenges, including participation barriers, potential centralization of influence, and ensuring the sustainability of governance processes. This research is motivated by the need to address these challenges by generating empirical data and insights that can inform the development of more effective governance systems.

Research Overview

Problem Statement:
The main problem this research addresses is understanding the practical implications of OpenGov systems within the Polkadot and Kusama networks. Specifically, the research will explore how these governance frameworks function in practice, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

Research Questions:

  1. How do participants in OpenGov systems interact with the governance mechanisms?
  2. What factors influence participation and decision-making in these decentralized systems?
  3. How can the design of OpenGov frameworks be improved to enhance participation, transparency, and efficiency?

Methodology:
The research will adopt an action research methodology, involving iterative cycles of data collection, analysis, and feedback. The research process will include:

  • Literature Review: Surveying existing research on decentralized governance and participatory decision-making.
  • Case Studies: Conducting in-depth studies of governance processes within Polkadot and Kusama.
  • Surveys and Interviews: Engaging with participants in OpenGov systems to gather qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Data Analysis: Using statistical and thematic analysis methods to interpret the data collected.
  • Actionable Recommendations: Providing concrete suggestions for improving OpenGov systems based on research findings.

Deliverables

  1. Research Report: A comprehensive report detailing the research findings, including insights into the functioning of OpenGov systems, participation dynamics, and recommendations for system improvements.
  2. Open Access Publication: Publishing the research findings in an open-access format to ensure the results are widely accessible.

Team Background:

Universaldot Foundation is a DAO focusing on research and development of decentralized infrastructure and governance. For more information, please refer to our website: https://universaldot.foundation

Future Plans:
Following the completion of this research, we plan to expand the scope of our work by conducting longitudinal studies to track the evolution of OpenGov systems over time. Additionally, we aim to explore the scalability of the OpenGov framework by applying our findings to other blockchain networks and decentralized organizations.

Thanks for the ref. I have a few questions about the proposal.

Will the community have opportunities to provide feedback on the research design or early findings? Also, how do you plan to share the results with the wider Polkadot community? Will there be workshops or events to understand the results and help apply the insights to improve governance?

@Pieky

Thank you for the question.

Yes, we expect to involve the community by conducting surveys and interviews regarding their experience of OpenGov. As written in the proposal, we will share all results publicly so the whole Polkadot and Kusama Communities can benefit from the research findings.

We will publicly share all findings via a research report under an open-source license.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Thank for this proposal. I have a few questions:

  1. How can we ensure that this research includes all stakeholders (small and large) and avoids any centralising influence?
  2. What concrete benefits will it bring to the governance of Polkadot and Kusama?

@xcRom1

  1. We will involve everyone who wants to participate in our survey. Among the questions we are trying to investigate is how decentralized/centralized this type of governance is.
  2. With our research, we aim to provide insight into how the current OpenGov system works as well as practical benefits for future improvement.

Hope that answers your questions.
